Literary Analysis #2

1.      In the book Mockingjay by Suzanna Collins, Katniss Everdeen has been rescued by the rebels from the 75th Annual Quarter Quell Hunger Games. Katniss agrees to become “the Mockingjay”, for the rebels. The leader of the rebels, President Coin, agrees to let Katniss kill President Snow. The rebels recue Peeta from the Capital; however, he has been brained washed into hating Katniss. Rebels take over the Districts and start heading towards the Capitol. President Snow is captured and he tells Katniss that it was President Coin was the one who did something to her sister, Prim. She then finds out Gale was involved and cannot look at him the same. After the war, she returns home to District 12. Peeta returns as well. Twenty years later she is married to Peeta and has two children.
2.      The theme is to stay strong and don’t always trust the people you know.
3.      I chose this book because I have read the first book and the second. Once I started reading it, it started to get really intense and interesting. It wanted to make you keep reading.
4.      I thought this book was realistic because they fight for survival and many people work really hard so they can survive. I can relate to a character Peeta because when I try to do something I tend to give up but then I keep on going and complete it.
5.      The tone of this book is very suspenseful and serious.
Characterization
1.      Direct characterization: “They are white, four-limed, about the size of a full grown human.” “He was mad because he couldn’t remember anything.” Indirect characterization:  “When boggs died, she fell down on her knees and put her had down.” “He slammed the gun on the table and yelled.”
2.      The author’s syntax does not change when she focuses on a character. She does not change the mood. Only when it is getting to the suspenseful part.
3.      The protagonist is a dynamic and round character. Katniss is a dynamic character because she changes her way of fighting in the war with the rebels so she starts to train and take things seriously.
4.      I think I met a person and watch them go through many difficult times and see how they change over time.
Enduring Memory
One thing I would remember from reading this book is that people go through many difficult things and have to make big sacrifices to accomplish something. Also, that trust can make you believe that you are safe but sometimes you are not.

Persepolis

Juan Hernandez
11/20/13
Block 2
Persepolis
The graphic novel Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi, she talks about her childhood and all the way until she is an adult. Growing up for her is really tough because there are constant murders in Iran, she lives on her own for a long time, and she has to deal with internal and external problems. Johan Bennett is stating that Persepolis should be banned in the Santa Maria Joint Union School District. She said, “It is a poor choice for a graphic novel for 10th graders.” The graphic novel Persepolis should not be banned.
Johan Bennett says that Persepolis is a poor choice of a graphic novel because it has crass language, violence, torture, sexual content, and inappropriate images. Persepolis is about Marji having to grow up surrounded by violence and showing us how bad it was in Iran. Marjane is only showing what she has been through. Johan Bennett is only talking about the bad stuff that happens, but there are plenty of lessons to learn in this graphic novel.
One reason that this graphic novel should not be banned is because there are many people who can relate to Marjane and the country Iran. For example, people can relate to Marjane because throughout the novel she constantly has problems like, lying to people, continuing her education, paying for her rent, and trying to survive on her own. This is important because many people go through situations like these. In addition, there are countries that have things in common with Iran. For example, countries have very strict rules, dress codes, and their religion. This is important because it shows that there are other countries that are similar to Iran.
Another reason why Persepolis should not be banned is because it teaches you many new things about a different country. For example, Persepolis mostly takes place in Iran, which many people who haven’t read this novel do not know many things about. There are many things about Iran that people might have not known about. Such as their strict dress code, and why women wear the veil. Also about the shah getting thrown out and the war inside their own country. Persepolis is not only a good book, but it is a good way to learn about a new country and how it was like to grow up in Iran.

The graphic novel Persepolis, by Marjane Satrapi, should not be banned from schools. Persepolis is a really good book. It is a different type of book that can teach you new things from her experiences and from Iran.

Persepolis
In the graphic novel Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi, she is a little girl who grows up in Iran during the revolution. Growing up for her is really tough because there is constant murders in Iran, she lives on her own for a long time, and she has to deal with internal and external problems. I believe that the U.S. and Iran have many things in common. For example, in Iran people protest and fight for what they want. In America we also protest. People can relate to Marji because throughout the book she constantly has problems. She lies to people and tries to get out of ruff situations. Although not everyone or everything can relate to Persepolis, there is much significance in this graphic novel.

The graphic novel Persepolis, by Marjane Satrapi, should not be banned from schools. Persepolis is a really good book. It is a different type of book that can teach you new things from her experiences and from Iran.

Literature Analysis

1. In Catching Fire, by Suzanna Collins two people make it back from the hunger games for the first time. Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark are the first two victors in the history of the hunger games to come out both alive. When Katniss and Peeta go on their victor tour, Katniss notices that there is an uprising in district 8. Katniss decides not to tell anyone but she accidentally tells Gale. Katniss plans to run away and asks Gale but he says no. She also asks Peeta and he is willing too, but they never end up running away. After a couple of weeks the 75th Quarter Quell announcement is made, which is strange because it wasn’t reaping time yet. The past victors of the hunger games will have to participate once again in the games. During the games several tributes form an alliance and plan to rebel from the capitol.

2. Themes:
-Fight for what is right: Katniss and Peeta rebel against the capital because they are tired of how they treat them.
-Survival: Everyone does anything to protect each other and survive.
3. Tone:

Antigone compare and contrast essay

In the play Antigone, Antigone breaks a law that King Creon has made. Now she has to face her consequence. Antigone is punished with death but she does not care because she is proud of what she’s done.
Antigone and Creon have many differences throughout the story, Antigone is loyal to her family. (2, 78) Antigone says, “Think death less than a friend? This death of mine is no importance; but if I had left my brother lying in death unburied, I should have suffered.” She says that she doesn’t care if she dies or not. She buried her brother and that’s all she needed to do. Antigone is also loyal to the gods. In scene two Antigone says “It was not gods proclamation. That final justice that rules that work below makes no such laws.” She says that no gods made such laws that Creon made. She respects the gods by following there laws and obeying them. Creon is really loyal to the state. (3, 110) Creon says “The state is king.” He respects the laws and the state more than his family. He thinks that the state and laws is king and should obey them. Creon is not loyal to his family. Creon doesn’t care about Antigone or her brother. He does not want anyone to burry Antigone’s brother.
Antigone and Creon share and have different similarities. They also both have pride. In (2, 59) Antigone says “I do deny nothing.” This demonstrates pride because she is proud of what she did. She is not regretful. In scene two Antigone acts very prideful of what she has done. In (1, ) Creon says, “and yet you dare defy the law.” Creon made the law that no one shall bury Antigone’s brother. This shows his disloyalty to his family. Antigone and Creon both share some similarities in pride.
In the end, each character has the blame for the tragic ending. If Creon would have been more loyal to his family he wouldn’t have sentenced Antigone to death. If Antigone would have denied about her burying her brother she would not be dead. But in the end both of them have their differences and it doesn’t end well.
